Coatbridge High

There is a games hall, library, dining hall, assembly hall, kitchen, exhibition hall, medical suite, guidance offices, staff common room, careers room, two gyms, janitors base, playground and football pitch. Other sporting facilities such as swimming baths, an indoor sports centre, an outdoor sports centre, several football, rugby and hockey pitches and the Time Capsule, all run by North Lanarkshire Council, are only minutes away from the school.

 

One of our aims is that our pupils should develop a leisure interest and to that end the school runs a number of extra-curricular activities during lunch break and after school. Some of the activities available include athletics, basketball, netball, golf, volleyball, badminton, football, hockey and skiing. There is also recorder club, theatre club, discos, band, computing club, art club, photography and graphics. All of our extra-curricular activities are run on a voluntary basis by staff, parents are also involved from time to time and their participation is greatly appreciated.

We are always glad to see parents as we believe that the home-school partnership can only be successful if there is good communication between staff and parents. In addition to formal meetings, there are special events such as concerts to which parents are invited. The head teacher and depute head teacher visit each primary school in March or April to meet the parents of those pupils who will transfer in August. Parents are then invited to an open evening at the school in May. 

Parents of fourth and fifth year pupils  are invited to a special meeting to give information about senior school subject choices and bursaries is held in the Spring. Most meetings are advertised to parents by letters given to pupils to take home. In addition, various members of staff send letters on individual matters about particular pupil's home throughout the year. We also have parents' newsletter, which is produced once a term to keep parents up to date with events in the school.

The school has strong links with our local community in many ways. The community uses the school as a local resource by hiring its facilities through community education lets and by attending some daytime classes as adult students. In addition, our pupils and staff regularly support local and national charities such as "Save the Children" by collecting for them, both within the school and in street collections. Pupils from the music department give concerts in the Coatbridge are and our staff assists with specialist teaching at some local primary schools.

There are six primary schools presently associated with Coatbridge high, although we have pupils from different primaries due to placing requests. Our associated primary schools are Bargeddie Primary, Gartsherrie Primary, Glenboig Primary, Greenhill Primary, Langloan Primary and Townhead Primary. All pupils attending our associated primary schools automatically transfer to Coatbridge high if they live in a street zoned for the high school. We aim to make the transfer as smooth as possible by many different ways. Having regular meetings between primary head teachers and the head teacher and depute head teacher S1 and S2 to discuss links, exchange information and make arrangements for P7 events. There is a primary seven quiz held in Coatbridge high in October.

The school handbook is issued to primary seven pupils in December and a newsletter twice a year during primary seven. In March/April head teacher and depute head teacher S1 and S2 meet primary seven pupils and their parents in the primary school also in May parents of primary seven pupils are invited to the school to see the work of the school. Guidance staff talks to parents at that meeting to give information about their role. Primary seven pupils spend two days at Coatbridge high school at the end of May following a typical S1 timetable with the depute head teacher making follow-up visits to answer questions and allay fears. A sports morning is held at Langloan track for primary seven pupils. A number of department's liaise with primary schools as well as primary pupils involved in music lessons take part in concerts in Coatbridge high school.
