Cardinal Newman High

Cardinal Newman High school badge Cardinal Newman high school was opened in 1977 following the amalgamation of Elmwood secondary, Bothwell, St Saviour's high school, Bellshill and St Catherine's Viewpark. The school is a Roman Catholic six-year comprehensive school catering for boys and girls and covering stages S1 to S6. It serves Bellshill, Mossend, Viewpark, Birkenshaw, and parts of Uddingston.

The school building is of unique design. Glass panels are a dominant feature of the building, and this, together with many other expansive angular structures, makes the school aesthetically pleasing. The icon building is part of the Council’s Lighting Strategy.  At night, 140 individual panels on the school are lit by a unique multi-coloured display of LED lighting.  In addition, the roof structure and futuristic plant room are illuminated internally by floodlights with vivid colours.  The lights bring the building to life at night as landmark in the local community.  The school is covered by security cameras and protected by security fencing.

The main teaching block is curved, and the science and social studies, technical and physical education, community and music blocks are linked to it around its circumference. The main block contains five year-group areas each with dining hall discussion room, year group social area and toilet. The first floor of the main block contains a large spacious library and resource centre, business studies, staff common room, administrative area and school office.

The foyer and hospitality block is the showpiece of the school. It incorporates a large theatre, which can seat 200 and a self contained adult lounge. It also houses the integrated school partner agencies.  Cardinal Newman incorporates a junior hospitality academy - including Snapdragon Restaurant - which is a curricular partnership between Home Economics in Cardinal Newman high school and Motherwell College.  The junior hospitality academy has a full professional training kitchen and restaurant/teaching area and is used across the school in both curricular and out of school hours learning activities. These include vocational courses and community partnership events such as out senior citizens club.

The associated primary schools, which currently send pupils to Cardinal Newman high school are Holy Family, Sacred HeartSt Gerard's , John Paul II and St John the Baptist primary.

In the year preceding the transfer to primary seven pupils from primary to secondary education, our staff make contact with pupils, teachers and parents in our associated primaries. The head teacher accompanied by the assistant head of lower school holds meetings with parents in each primary school. Throughout the session the senior teacher responsible for primary and secondary liaison, learning support staff and other teachers leading curricular projects visits primary pupils. The purpose of these visits is to prepare the children for life in secondary school. These visits are supplemented by our primary seven conference, summer school and joint enterprise activities.

Extra curricular activities play a significant part in school life and involve a large number of pupils in every year group. The school has also enjoyed a series of successful school outings to London as well as the Kilbowie Outdoor Centre in Oban.  In recent years we have formed links with a partner school in Palma, Mallorca which we use to exchange students, improve language skills and work experience for hospitality students.

Football, basketball and volleyball continue to be the leading team pursuits. Many other sporting and athletic pursuits are undertaken by pupils such as badminton, rugby, netball and athletics. The school also continues to be involved in the arts. Drama and music are and always be a big part of the school curriculum, the school has recently produced full-scale versions of the musicals High School Musical and Calamity Jane with a production already being planned for next year.

The school enjoys very strong links with the local community and has a close business engagement partnerships. Some examples of this include the help given, mainly by senior pupils in local hospitals and child nurseries and fundraising for senior citizens at Christmas. One example of our students having opportunity to be effective contributors is the strong links with our business engagement partner St Andrews Hospice.  Many pupils from all year groups give freely of their time to become involved in community fundraising events.
