Brannock high school is a non-denominational, co-educational comprehensive school, teaching pupils from 11 to 18 years old. Our catchment area is the four villages of Carfin, Holytown, New Stevenston and Newarthill. The school is constructed with 18 standard classrooms, equipped to meet the special needs of modern teaching in English, mathematics, social subjects and languages. |
|
The school is very compact, all teaching accommodation being in one building on the ground floor and on floors one to three, the only exceptions being music, physical education and technical, which are housed in adjoining wings. The wide expanse of open areas surrounding the school incorporate a blaes hockey/soccer area, and a 400 metre running track which encircles a large rugby field. A large tarmac area provides an alternative area for the indoor sports already mentioned, plus tennis, five-a-side soccer and netball. The immediate catchment area has ample soccer fields for the needs of the school. |

To facilitate modern developments in these and other subjects there are five well-equipped computer rooms, four with PC's and one with apple macintosh. Music is catered for in two specially equipped classrooms, one electronic keyboard room and an instrumental practise room.
For science there are seven laboratories and a technician's room. Art is catered for by a large open plan area normally accommodating two classes and including areas for individual pupils working in specialist fields. A further art room is provided together with a dark room for photographic work. The home economics department is also constructed on an open plan basis, there being two practical areas. In modern languages the three rooms are equipped with listening facilities which allow pupils to work on an individual basis and at their own pace. Attached to the modern languages department is a recording studio, which is available to all departments, for the use of audio-visual equipment. A very pleasing feature of the school is the provision of a bright library and resource base very well stocked with book and non-book material.
In physical education the school has excellent facilities. The large games hall caters particularly well for indoor games with full-size courts for badminton, basketball, volleyball and tennis. The gymnasium is excellently equipped for gymnastics and is also furnished as a dance studio, whilst a special room is equipped for weight lifting.
Brannock high school's situation makes it ideal for utilising the Water Sports Centre at Strathclyde Country park, where pupils can follow pursuits such as sailing and canoeing and land activities such as orienteering, hill walking and outdoor pursuits are within reach of the school, with easy access to the Campsies, Clyde Valley and Lowther Hills. swimming can be catered for with easy access to Bellshill and Motherwell Aquatec. Considerable use is made of Wishaw Sports Centre and Kilbowie Outdoor Centre.
Office accommodation for the administrative staff, guidance staff, catering service staff and medical inspection is adequate. The cafeteria has been recently substantially refurbishment, and offers a wide range of fare. The school has been constructed with the physically disabled in mind. Ramps have been provided at strategic places either in place of or in addition to stairs, and a lift is provided for transport between floors. Special toilets and showers have been constructed in the physical education block and in the medical suite. Other special facilities are available wherever particular children will find difficulty in following normal classroom work. Special arrangements are made to allow all pupils to visit swimming baths regularly. A pleasant working environment is provided for all.
The school provides a wide range of extra-curricular activities for pupils. There are team sports available such as football, hockey, netball, rugby and volleyball. Other sports and games include archery, athletics, badminton, cross country running, skiing and table tennis. The musical activities available are junior choir, percussion group, pop group and school band. There is also a book club, video club and chess club. Other activities available within the school are discos, theatre outings, overseas visits, inter-house art competition, residential stays at outdoor centres, public speaking competition, charity fund-raising.
There are various subject clubs operating at lunchtime and after school. In addition, the school supports outward bound at Loch Eil, Easter schools and the summer academy at Strathclyde university. Plans are in place for a tutor scheme and also to progress study skills.
The authority is currently examining ways in which an enhanced provision can be made for our senior students, especially in the areas of advanced higher in S6, and S5/S6 study in subjects which attract only a small uptake of students. Proposals area still awaited. Meanwhile informal arrangements will apply whereby some of our students elect to study some of their subjects in neighbouring schools, just as this school caters for pupils from elsewhere. In addition, distance learning courses are available for certain subjects. Some of our pupils also take courses at Motherwell College. Full details are provided for pupils at option time.
The school catchment area takes in Carfin, Holytown, New Stevenston and Newarthill, in which the associated primary schools are Holytown Primary School, Keir Hardie Memorial Primary School, New Stevenston Primary School and Newarthill Primary School.
