Airdrie Academy school badge

Airdrie Academy is a non-denominational secondary school catering for boys and girls in the North Airdrie area. The school has a fine history and, in 1999, celebrated 150 years of excellent service to the community. The school accommodation consists of four main buildings. Main "A" block contains approximately 30 teaching classrooms, including specialist areas for art, drama, music, physical education as well as the assembly hall and administrative area.

Airdrie Academy is continually looking for ways in which it can develop closer links with the community it serves. This is achieved through the active involvement of pupils in schemes such as charitable fund-raising, involvement in local schools and nurseries, working with the disabled, mini-enterprise schemes, the organisation and distribution of Christmas parcels to the elderly, links with local businesses through work experience and so on.

The house block is a purpose-built block providing guidance offices, dining room/cafeteria facilities and the library resource centre. It also provides over 30 classrooms, and specialist facilities for computing, business education, home economics and learning support.

The technical block is a separate unit that provides purpose-built classrooms for craft, technology and graphic communication. Part of the block houses a family and pre-five centre. There is also a science block which is a purpose-built block with laboratories, project rooms and lecture theatres. Issues associated with the accommodation of pupils with disabilities are examined individually and provision is made in relation to the individual's requirements where possible.

A wide range of facilities is provided by the school for sports and outdoor education. These include gyms and games hall, school assembly hall, school playing fields and an all weather playing area.

Pupils and staff are involved in a wide range of activities including swimming where pupils can compete in the Lanarkshire and Scottish championships. The school football team plays in Lanarkshire cups and leagues Scottish cups. There is netball available from under 12 to under 19 level and the netball clubs play in a variety of leagues/cups such as Monklands leagues, youth league, Scottish cups, the national tournament and various open cups throughout the session. There are other activities on offer such as hockey, badminton, theatre, sailing, bridge and basketball. The music department offers a wide range of choirs and bands. The school also offers foreign trips at Easter/summer to various European locations, skiing trips are also available during Christmas/Easter breaks to dry slopes and snow.

There are nine primary schools in the Airdrie Academy catchment area, eight of which are directly associated with the school, while the ninth Clarkston primary school, transfers a minority share of its pupils to the Academy. The associated primary schools are, Albert Primary, Chapelside Primary, Golfhill Primary, Greengairs Primary, New Monkland Primary, Rochsolloch Primary, Tollbrae Primary, Victoria Primary and Clarkston Primary.
