Abronhill high is a modern, non-denominational comprehensive secondary school in the Abronhill area of Cumbernauld. The school was opened in 1978. The school consists of a three story classroom block, the PE wing containing swimming pool, games hall and gymnasium, a theatre, library, dining area, music suite and specialist accommodation for business studies, computing, home economics, science and technical. There is a hockey and a football pitch. |

We positively welcome parental involvement in school life and adopt a number of approaches to encourage this. One of the school board's main purposes is to encourage links between parents and the school. Our school newsletter, newslink, is issued approximately four times per session and is an excellent way to let parents and the wider community know about the achievements of our pupils and about school events. |

Pupil roll statistics from Scottish Government census at September 2007. Rolls are subject to change throughout the school session.
The classroom block is provided with a lift and access therefore can welcome persons with certain difficulties.
| There are many extra curricular activities available for the pupils such as theatre visits, modelling club, computing club, maths club. School shows are presented regularly, which involve a very large number of pupils, and are enormously enjoyed by all. Skiing is also pursued. The North Lanarkshire Council Outward Bound initiative has proved popular and valuable for those pupils selected to take part. |
 |
We are taking part in North Lanarkshire Council's sports co-ordinator scheme, this is increasing the variety of sports on offer and the numbers of pupils participating at lunchtimes and after school. Visit to european destinations are regularly organised by staff and are extremely popular. The school community is indebted to those staff who are prepared to give so willingly of their own time for these visits.
As part of the educational programme of the school, links with the community are encouraged. Community placements are arranged for childcare courses and for some work experience. Our students contribute to, package and deliver Christmas gift parcels to local people.
There is also a calendar of events which is issued each session, outlining any important dates. We have occasional open evenings to enable parents of different groups of pupils to be consulted about aspects of provision made by the school.
There are two local primary schools associated with Abronhill high school, Abronhill primary school and Whitelees primary school. We maintain close links with our associated primary schools and meet primary staff regularly. Guidance teachers and support for learning staff have an important role in ensuring a smooth transaction to secondary school so they are involved in a programme of meetings with primary colleagues. Several Abronhill high staff are involved in various link projects. During the summer term primary seven pupils make an extended visit to Abronhill to sample class activities and to meet their new S1 classmates. To help S1 settle in, and to help avoid problems such as bullying, S5 and S6 students act as 'buddies' to S1, reassuring them and being able to talk. For parents of the current P7s, there are opportunities to meet the high school staff and to see round the school.
