Woodlands primary is a non-denominational co-educational primary school teaching children from primary one to primary seven. It is a semi open-plan school, which opened in August 2000 as the result of the amalgamation of Langlands primary and Melrose primary. The catchment area covers both Carbrain and Greenfaulds. |
| The school has 13 large classrooms. There is a large gymnasium and a kitchen with dining. As the school is all on one level, we are able to accommodate children with mobility problems who can cope in mainstream primary. The school has a basic disabled toilet within the infant department and a unisex disabled toilet within the junior/senior department as well as ramps to two rooms via the fire doors. We also have a nursery is situated within the main building, which provides half-day sessions, morning and afternoon. |

There are many out of school activities available within the school which include, netball, gymnastics, the McFit club and art and craft. Children also have the opportunity to learn recorder as well as a junior and senior choir.
Since it is most important for school and home to work together in the child's best interests, parents are invited to contact the school to discuss their child's progress or behaviour at any time. Parents are kept informed by letters of events such as parent's evenings, functions arranged by the parents association, concerts etc. Early in each session an information night is held for parents of the new primary one pupils. This has prove very useful in the past giving parents a clear picture of what to expect while suggesting ways in which they can support and encourage their children. Workshops are held to support and inform parent's of the work of their child at school. Parent helpers are a valuable resource, and in Woodlands we have a regular group of helpers each week who work with the teachers or have special tasks such as display, photocopying, gardening and helping out on school trips etc. it is our aim to develop links with the wider community by involving our local senior citizens club in school events and encouraging liaison with Glencryan school.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Woodlands primary normally transfer to Greenfaulds High School.
