Thornlie primary school is located in Pather, Wishaw and is accessible from the M74 or the M8 via Motherwell. Public transport is available through road and rail facilities which operate frequent services from several neighbouring towns as well as from Glasgow; it is a non-denominational co-educational school teaching children from primary one to primary seven. |
|
The main building consists of a one-storey traditional building which dates from 1957. The school has eight classrooms, seven of which are used as bases for classes and one of which is used as a computer suite. Outside each classroom are working bays; there is also a general purpose/dining hall plus a purpose built gym/assembly hall with a large stage. Disabled access to the premises is available at several entrances. The school has a maximum capacity for 231 pupils. |

The school has eight classrooms, seven of which are used as bases for classes and one of which is used as a computer suite and music room. Outside each classroom are working bays where resources are stored and where small groups of children can work. We have a purpose built gym and assembly hall which has a large stage. The dining hall is spacious and also serves as a general purpose room.
Staffing includes two music specialists who visit the school one day per week, a social work group worker once a week, and we have 0.5 of an early years worker. Members of the network support team also serve the school on an agreed time allocation while there are two classroom assistants who are timetabled to provide support in each classroom as well as an SEN auxiliary who works with specific children on an agreed basis.
The school plays an active role within the immediate community and through liaison with the wider community and other educational establishments. The school has strong links with its associated secondary, Clyde Valley high, and a number of our children regularly attend new opportunities funded programmes at the high school after 3pm. In addition, all Thornlie teachers have offered after-school activities to our pupils—these have included arts and crafts, rugby, digital photography, netball, football, singing and pottery.
The school board is extremely supportive of the school and takes an active interest in school matters. Parental involvement is essential to the values of Thornlie; we currently have strong parental involvement in infant classes, working in classrooms as well as with such initiatives as "Kerbcraft" and "Story sacks", and we are seeking to continue and extend such activities. A parent teacher association (PTA) has just re-started in 2005.
The school offers a high standard of educational provision to its pupils and all members of staff are expected to provide wide and balanced curricular provision to ensure that high standards are maintained. Staff members are regularly involved in professional review and development activities and have many opportunities through in-service development to further develop their own professional and personal skills.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Thornlie primary normally transfer to Clyde Valley high, Wishaw.
Values and aims
Equality of opportunity is a philosophical approach, which should permeate an institution or community affecting all aspects of its operations. Thornlie is a community which endeavours to provide free and equal access to education with an ethos which ensures all children and adults are respected and valued as part of that community. No person in Thornlie should be disadvantaged due to colour, creed, gender, background or any other cultural difference. We actively seek to empower all of our children by providing a context that enables them to fulfil their potential and to develop academically, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
