During the year each class has several outings – some are related to their project others are visits to areas of special interest or summer trips. We also invite theatre groups to the school to perform for the children several times each session. Throughout the school children take part in a wide range of competitions, sports challenges and local quizzes. Each year we have a comprehensive programme of converts and sports days. There are after school clubs for football, badminton and netball run by staff and parents.
The school adjoins Wishaw sports centre and makes regular use of its facilities. In particular, we are able to allow P5 to P7 pupils a term's allocation of weekly swimming lessons. We are extremely fortunate to be able to offer after school activities every day of the week. These include football, badminton, netball, music and craft. Each year P7 pupils take part in a three to five day outdoor activity programme. This is usually a residential experience which is subsidised on the occasions when the school secures a place at North Lanarkshire's own outdoor centre at Kilbowie. In all of these activities we value the support of parents who allow their children to take part, and who help us with supervision etc.
We place a high value on parental support as it enriches the whole school. It is also extremely important for discipline and motivation that pupils know that their parents are in agreement with the school and are working together to a common aim. Arrangements for parents evenings are detailed under assessment. In addition there are regular newsletters, open days for primary one, curricular meetings and meetings throughout the year on important matters such as First Communion, primary/secondary transfers etc. We encourage parents who are free to come into the school and work with staff and pupils in a variety of practical and craft activities.
St Thomas' prides itself on the excellent links it has with the local and wider community. We have strong links with St Aidan's High school whose support through the primary/secondary liaison programme is excellent. We work closely with all local primary schools. Our local nursery schools provide invaluable assessment advice on new pupils. Our children take part in a wide range of charitable activities. We serve our community with our extravaganza concerts and regularly entertain pensioner and professional groups. Our pupils are in turn well served by the many visitors and agencies who work with them eg the police 'Steps' programme involves pupils in considering personal safety/choices/drug awareness etc through a series of age appropriate workshops. School doctor, nurses and community involvement police officers all play their part in promoting our pupils' welfare. In return, our pupils take part in a wide range of events sponsored by these groups.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Thomas' normally transfer to St Aidan's high school, Wishaw.
