St Stephen's Primary

St Stephen's Primary school badge

St Stephen's primary is a Roman Catholic, co-educational school which teaches children at the stages of primary one to seven. The building is bright and modern. An individual classroom is available for each class. The infant classrooms open onto a large open/activity area which is furnished and used for structured play activities. Within this space, adjoining each classroom, is a "project area" equipped to allow group work overflow from the classroom. Each of these areas has its own display board space, work and display tops and storage space. Cloakroom and toilet facilities are shared by each group of two classrooms.

The upper school has similar provision, but here the open area is replaced by a noisy or quiet room which is available between each pair of classrooms. This is an asset where group teaching is the accepted method throughout the school. Timetabling of these areas is arranged, in mutual agreement, by teachers involved. One large, well equipped hall and gymnasium with stage is shared by all. On either side of the hall there are fairly large, suitably furnished, dining areas where children taking school meals and packed lunches are accommodated. The school has a well equipped library in addition to individual classroom book collections. Each classroom has a computer with internet access and a computer suite is available for class lessons in ICT.

The school has its own medical suite where the usual services are provided for children. In our very adequate playground provision, a football pitch, netball court and hopscotch beds have been marked out to encourage children in positive, healthy and good social attitudes to play. Since the start of the school year funding has also been used to provide additional playground equipment, namely ball boards, giant pencils and a low level adventure trail.

Every opportunity is taken to forge strong "home, school and community" links, since these are essential for the proper functioning of any educational establishment. Our policy in St Stephen's is to make parents and all visitors welcome at all times. Parents are kept informed in numerous ways. From time to time parent workshops are held for the parents of pre-school and primary children. Meetings both formal and informal, are arranged. Informally, it is possible for parents to be in contact and involved through the parent helpers group. These are parents who give some of their time to help in the school on a voluntary basis. Other informal, social, fund raising evenings are held throughout the year. The school board is also instrumental in helping to forge links with the local and wider community.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Stephen's normally transfer to St Andrew's High, Coatbridge.
