St Matthew's Primary

St Matthew's Primary school badge St Matthew's primary is a co-educational Roman Catholic school for pupils aged between four and a half and 12 years.  There are seven classes this session, one at each stage P1-P7. St Matthew's was built in 1956 and serves the area of Wishawhill and Craigneuk. It has extensive groups with grassy and wooded areas and has its own all-weather football pitch. Recently a metal fence has been erected around the school to combat vandalism and to improve security.

Reference should be made to the important role that the school plays in the local community. We have a parent support worker who runs various classes for parents. The parent support worker also participates in children's learning, helped by a group of parents, by taking infant classes for structured play every week. They also assist in the organisation of weekly paired reading and share-a-book sessions, involving parents, grandparents and friends. Primary seven children are also taken for talks in bully proofing, drugs awareness, safety in the community and emergency first-aid.

Over many years St Matthew's has been able to offer many opportunities for children to participate in a wide range of activities organised by staff and parents. There is a school football team which trains every week. There is a badminton club for primary six children which also takes place every week. Primary six children also have the opportunity to take part in the sports fun club. North Lanarkshire Council allocated places for some of our primary six and primary seven children at a weekly sport college during the school session.

Every year the children in primary seven are given the chance to go to Scarborough from Monday to Friday in June. If there is any places still available then the trip is also offered to primary six children. During this outing the children visit places of interest eg York, Whitby, Bridlington etc. Being away on their own gives the children the chance to be responsible for their appearance, their room and the chance to enhance their social skills with their peers.

During terms one and three a private interview will be arranged for each parent to give them an opportunity to consult the class teacher regarding their child's progress. Each term, a letter giving details of events which are of general interest is sent to parents. When educational visits take place, it is the policy of the school to invite parents to share in the supervision of the children. Parents who would be willing to take on this responsibility are invited to give their names to their child's teacher. A variety of locations and times are involved in these visits, ranging from local libraries to ancient buildings, theatres and art galleries. Parents of the intake classes will be invited to bring their children to the school during this summer term prior to starting school to familiarise children with the school environment. After the start of the session parents of these classes will be invited to talks on the approach to reading, mathematics and writing.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Matthew's who live in the Wishawhill area normally transfer to St Aidan's High School, Wishaw and pupils who live in the Craigneuk area normally transfer to Our Lady's High School, Motherwell.
