St Mary's is the local Roman Catholic school which serves the Whifflet area, and accepts both boys and girls from primary one to primary seven. We all share the same belief that we can offer children a varied school life which will help them to grow as a complete person – physically, emotionally, spiritually, socially and fit them for life. |
| At St Mary's we aim to strengthen links within the local community. These include craft workshops with local sheltered housing residents, distribution of Christmas hampers to the housebound and liasing with Coatholm Nursery and secondary schools in the area. Continued promotion of charity fundraising, which provides substantial donations to local and international charities. |

Children feel secure in school when the relationship between parents and teachers is a positive one. Parents are invited to the school several times each year to meet class teachers and establish a partnership of caring interest. During the summer term, a programme of visits and workshops is arranged for parents of new entrants. Parents have the opportunity to meet class teachers and become familiar with the equipment and methods, which will be used, in the early stages of reading and number work. Regular communication by letter, via the children, helps keep parents informed of any changes affecting normal routines and any matters of current interest.
We have a very active Parents Association and School Board. Parents are also involved in our football and netball coaching. With the introduction of our activity afternoons for P4 to P7, parents are actively involved in our activities. The activities include music, environmental project, drama, technology, computing, silent reading, library reference skills, arts and crafts, knitting and sewing, educational games, home economics and science. Parent helpers are also involved in our structured play programme P1 to P3. Parents are always involved in our educational outings as helpers.
Curriculum Workshops are now a strong feature in our partnership with parents. These workshops are scheduled for September and October each year and reflect what our school is targeting at that time regarding our curriculum. Parents are informed, in advance, via an invitation and reminded via our school newsletter.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Mary's primary normally transfer to St Andrew's High School, Coatbridge.
