St Mary's primary school is a Roman Catholic, co-educational primary school covering the stages of primary one to seven and we also have a non-denominational nursery. The school caters for pupils living in the Seafar, Ravenswood and Greenfaulds areas of the town. We also have pupils from the Village, Dullatur, Castlecary, Luggiebank, Westerwood and Carrickstone. St Mary's first opened in temporary accommodation in August 1965. Transfer to the present premises in a quiet residential area took place in August 1968. |
| In St Mary's we are also keen for our children to participate in all aspects of the local and wider community as this helps to promote a sense of citizenship. We have close links with the school nurse, community police and the fire service. Our pupils participate in local competitions and initiatives. At Christmas they entertain the senior citizens. P7 pupils have the opportunity to be involved in Quality Quest under the auspices of Inland Revenue. |

Since August pupils have been able to participate in a number of out of school hours sports activities. Badminton, football and netball are all available. Badminton is funded by Cumbernauld and Kilsyth sports. If funding is available it is hoped that it can be offered again. Out of hours learning projects are offered to P5 to P7 linked to enterprise education and values and citizenship. We hope to extend these activities over the next session. P6 and P7 are given the opportunity to take part in a five day residential trip eg Kilbowie Outdoor Centre. We are keen to encourage children to take part in such a trip and you should encourage your child to do so. Swimming is part of the education programme provided by the authority. We are keen to allow pupils to take part in educational outings related to the curriculum. Instrumental tuition is also available in school.
Our school actively encourages a close link with parents. This helps us to know and understand our pupils more fully and enables us to develop the best possible relationship between child, parents and school. We regard partnership with parents as vital. We keep regular contact through our monthly newsletter. This is the main way of letting our parents know about many events and activities which our parents are invited and made most welcome. Volunteer parents help out with excursions and in preparing props, costumes and sets for school shows. We fully appreciate all help from our parents and we are always in need of your support.
Throughout the year all pupils are involved in fund-raising activities and achievements are promoted in the local press. As a Catholic school St Mary's has a fundamental link with the local parishes. The parish priests directly support the Faith and Learning which underpins the school Ethos.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Mary's normally transfer to Our Lady's High, Dowanfield Road, Cumbernauld. A well structured programme of primary and secondary liaison with Our Lady's high school assists with the transaction from P7 to S1 and ensures that our children look forward to the challenges of high school with confidence. This programme includes members of staff from the secondary school teaching a four week block of their specialist subject in P7. A parent information evening is held in the primary school where the head teacher and members of staff discuss aspects of transaction and the secondary curriculum. Frequent meetings are held where the head teachers of the associated primaries meet with the head teacher of Our Lady's and the assistant head teacher for S1. Primary seven teachers and guidance also meet to hand over information.
