St Mary's primary school and nursery class serves the village of Cleland. The school is a Roman Catholic, co-educational primary school covering the stages of nursery to primary seven. Cleland was formerly a mining village. There is a distinctive sense of community in Cleland and St Mary's is a central role in that. At St Mary's we value highly the school's position in the Cleland community. |
| Opportunities are made to involve our local community in school life and we utilise the many resources in the community to enrich the life of the school. Recent concerts involve OAP as guests and Cleland Primary P7 pupils and St Mary's form a joint choir annually and visit Cleland hospital. Occasionally, both schools have also come together in St Mary's to enjoy a live theatre production. Cleland PTA and St Mary's have also organised joint fundraising ventures, eg parent disco evening. |

There is many extra-curricular activities available within our school which children have the opportunity to participate in. There is a school football team and they will be involved in games with other local schools throughout the session. Each class has an educational outing at the end of the summer term. Classes visit exhibitions and places of interest connected with the school curriculum and projects. St Mary's pupils form a mixed team taking part in North Lanarkshire's football league where local primary schools compete in a friendly atmosphere which fosters mutual respect and the development of skills.
Primary seven pupils have an outdoor educational experience during a week at Kilbowie Centre if available. Primary six and seven pupils also have the opportunity to participate in a visit to France every two years. Primary six pupils have swimming instruction on a weekly basis at Wishaw Sports Centre. St Mary's also provides after school clubs eg football club for primary six and seven pupils, "McFitt for Play" for primary five, six and seven pupils and various out of hours learning classes.
The children visit a Christmas pantomime and at least once per year. The Children's Theatre visits the school so that each child has the opportunity at least twice per year to participate in live theatre and drama. "Scottish Opera for All" is also involved regularly providing workshops for our pupils. Hopscotch Theatre Company brings the experience of theatre to our pupils annually. The Edinburgh Science Festival also provides fascinating science workshops for our pupils annually. Classes often visit venues directly connected with topics studied in class.
St Mary's also have a range of after school clubs which include football skills club, chess club, "McFitt for Play" and a badminton club. Pupils also take part in North Lanarkshire's sports college which involves a group of senior pupils participating in gymnastics and badminton programmes at Taylor high.
We value strong links being formed between home and school. Also a network of parent helpers exists. The parents involved provide invaluable practical help and support on a regular basis and take an active part in the educational and social life of the school. Parents receive a monthly newsletter fully informing them of school events. In December and June, they also receive a detailed daily calendar of events. There is a special notice board for information for parents inside the main entrance hallway.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Mary's normally transfer to Taylor High School, New Stevenston.
