The new St Joseph's school was officially opened on Tuesday 21 May 1985 by Councillor Andrew Ferguson, JP. This building replaced the old school which had been in use since around 1900. Situated on Cardowan Road, opposite St Joseph's Church, the building is designed as a single stream primary school. This accommodation comprises seven classrooms, activity areas and separated staff areas. |
| The site access, pathways and school entrances are designed to facilitate disabled access to all parts of the school. The existing play field was provided with an all weather playing surface. The infant and senior classrooms are of a traditional closed type, while primaries two, three, four and five are semi-open plan. The classrooms are bright and have extensive display surfaces. |

The ancillary teaching facilities consist of a library, audio and visual room, activities area and hall suitable for badminton and netball. The school also has a medical suite for visiting health services and a kitchen.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Joseph's primary normally transfer to Our Lady's High, Dowanfield Road, Cumbernauld. A well structured programme of primary and secondary liaison with Our Lady's high school assists with the transaction from P7 to S1 and ensures that our children look forward to the challenges of high school with confidence.
This programme includes members of staff from the secondary school teaching a four week block of their specialist subject in P7. A parent information evening is held in the primary school where the head teacher and members of staff discuss aspects of transaction and the secondary curriculum. Frequent meetings are held where the head teachers of the associated primaries meet with the head teacher of Our Lady's and the assistant head teacher for S1. Primary seven teachers and guidance also meet to hand over information.
