St Ignatius' Primary

St Ignatius Primary school badge St Ignatius' primary is denominational, co-educational school which is based in Wishaw. The school is staffed by nine teaching and eleven non teaching staff. The school is using the national guidelines to deliver a broad based curriculum which is structured and balanced. Staff are involved in devising school policies and guidelines for classroom practice to ensure continuity and progression.

The support of parents in their children's education is of great importance and it is our desire to strengthen home and school links. A programme of homework is delivered weekly. The school operates a policy whereby parents are welcome to contact the head teacher on any matter concerning their child's progress or welfare. There is an active Parent Association who give great support to the school.

We endeavour to encourage each child to reach his or her full potential and to develop personal skills and interests to the greatest possible extent.  The broad curriculum which the school offers embraces the following areas:

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Environmental Studies
  • Expressive Arts
  • Religious Education

It is the school's aim to identify learning difficulties as soon as possible.  Many of these difficulties can be resolved by the class teacher but where additional help is needed, a member of the Area Learning Support Team will work with class teacher to set learning targets during their weekly visit.  We aim to ensure that provision is made for all pupils to achieve their full potential.

Pupils are normally transferred between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 years so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education.  Pupils normally transfer to St Aidan's High School.

We aim to provide a safe, secure environment and an education of high quality where each child is encouraged to fulfil his/her full potential and where a Christian atmosphere promotes respect and mutual understanding.

The educational aims of the school are:

  • To develop skills and knowledge in the four main areas of language - reading, writing, listening and talking, to enrich communication and to develop a love for language.
  • To develop skills in mathematical thinking and practice which can be applied to everyday life and encourage children to develop problem solving strategies.
  • To help children develop an awareness of the environment and the skills necessary to interact effectively and to develop informed attitudes relating to the care and conservation of the environment.
  • To encourage children to be creative and imaginative and to develop skills which will promote intellectual and aesthetic development.
  • To promote respect and mutual understanding in a Catholic atmosphere and to encourage children to follow the teachings of the Catholic Church.
