St Francis of Assisi primary school is a Roman Catholic co-educational primary school situated in the Westfield area of Cumbernauld. The school covers the stages of primary one to primary seven. Children are reminded that their school is part of the neighbourhood and that they are members of the community with define responsibilities to others around them. |
| Their behaviour, care of property, etc has a great impact on the area and those who live in it. To foster this awareness of others, every effort is made to involve pupils with other groups in the community. We liase with St Maurice's high school, nursery schools, senior citizens etc. With Our Lady and St Helen's Church we have very close ties – some of our pupils are altar servers, involved in Church choir, members of Church clubs etc. |

| The school offers many extra-curricular activities to our pupils. We have our own football pitch. Pupils in various classes receive football training from a SFA coach at least once a year. The school team plays in friendly matches with other local schools and is involved in area tournaments. We also have our own Basketball team "The Frisco Kids" involving primaries six and seven. The team is affiliated to Glasgow Schools Mini-Basketball Association. We participate in tournaments. Primary seven pupils attend weekly swimming classes at swimming pool in Tryst Leisure Centre one term per session. They receive instructions from a qualified instructor and participate in the Scottish Swimming Award Scheme. There is also a school handball team "The All Stars" which train every week.
At St Francis of Assisi it is very important that strong links are forged between the school and home. The induction programme for new entrants to primary one and their parents has been developed and extended during the last few sessions. The children and their parents visit the school on one or two occasions in May or June – this enables them to meet the class teacher, the head teacher and the children who will be in their class. They also participate in a variety of activities in the classroom. The parents have at least three meetings with the class teacher and the head teacher between August and October holiday week. Parents are very much involved in the preparation of their children for the Sacraments. In primary three, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is received and the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist are received in primary four.
The programme for further parental involvement in school will continue to be expanded especially at the primary seven stage where parents will be encouraged to visit school to participate with their children in talks/discussions with the school nurse, community police officer etc as the children prepare for the further challenges of secondary school. Parents are also invited to become involved in many projects in connection with the school such as sport, drama, concerts, competitions, holiday excursions, etc. They are also, in some instances, invited to speak to pupils about their work, be interviewed etc. Parental involvement is always very welcome in our school. We have our shared reading programme with primary one and primary two and paired reading in primary three. This is in line with North Lanarkshire interest in early intervention. The parents are extremely important in this programme as materials are taken home to be read.
The Parents' Association meets regularly. It participates in fund raising activities to provide additional equipment for the school, organises special activities for the pupils, such as discos, and arranges social events so that those connected with the school may get to know each other better. It also provides support for extra curricular activities such as school excursions, senior citizens concerts etc.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from St Francis of Assisi primary normally transfer to St Maurice's High School, Cumbernauld.
