Rochsolloch Primary and Nursery

Rochsolloch Primary school badge

Rochsolloch primary is situated in Airdrie and is a co-educational, non-denominational school.  At present there are 11 teachers within the school, teaching children from primary one to primary seven.

Generally classes are organised in primary stages, P1 to P7. However depending on numbers at each stage and the total roll of the school, it is sometimes necessary to form composite classes. As in previous years composite classes will comprise of children who work well together and work at the same level in their language work.

Certain activities are not included in everyday curriculum, and were it not for the extra time and help given by teachers, parents and friends, such activities would not be possible. Interested pupils are encouraged to participate in football, netball and more recently a computer club. Educational visits relating to work being done in school are encouraged eg Glasgow Zoo and Safari Park. senior departments visits may be arranged to farms, the People's Palace, Edinburgh Castle, Bannockburn etc. Parents are encouraged to accompany classes on outings and to assist with events in school eg book fairs, cake and candy sales etc. The older children are encouraged to organise their own events which involve the community eg daffodil teas, stalls at the Christmas fayre.

Parents are encouraged to take an active interest in the school and there is an active Parent Teacher Association. The depute head teacher holds meetings in May and June with the parents of children due to begin school in August. Another meeting is held in September prior to the children coming to school full time. We are hoping to invite parents to take part in workshops in the school to give them an opportunity to see and experience some of the activities and areas in the curriculum which we study. We have in the past few years involved parents in paired reading, paired writing and paired maths activities. They have proved very successful and it is hoped to introduce one of these activities again this session.

They school plays an important role in the local community. Visits are made by a member of the school staff to both Heathpark nursery and Devonview Nursery, prior to the children starting school each year. We have close contact with the other primary schools in our area and we liase with the secondary schools which our pupils will attend at the end of primary seven – Airdrie Academy and in one or two cases Coatbridge High School or Caldervale High School. In the past we have had visits from nurses, ambulance services, fire services and our community policeman. The policeman talks to the children about road safety, strangers and vandalism with the older children. We have found these visits very useful and enjoyable for the children. Some of the children have visited Monklands hospital during their topic work on hospitals. We are always keen to meet people from our local community as they are being educated to take their place in that community.
