The school is used after school hours for netball, football and badminton. The pupils are encouraged to join these. We are grateful to parents and staff who help with these groups. Every opportunity is taken to make visits to places of interest, perhaps on connection with a topic or of community interest. We are keen to encourage parent helpers to join a class on an outing, which allows staff to enjoy a partnership role with parents, as well as encouraging the children.
In Old Monkland primary we are very keen to forge links with parents; to work in partnership with them, in the education of our pupils. We positively encourage parental involvement in the form of parent helpers – in classroom, playground, outing, sports etc. There is also a fund raising committee for special events. We like to keep the lines of communication open by talking and listening to parents, as well as sending letters/newsletters home on a regular basis, keeping parents well informed and up to date on current and future events in the school. We hope that parents feel comfortable about visiting the school and we're always pleased to see them – whether it's on an informal visit to pick up a child or a parents evening, when progress reports are given to parents. Parents' evenings take place twice per year and appointments are made for this. The school is very fortunate to have an excellent provision for parents in crèche, playgroup and educational classes every day. A variety of classes, including computer and typing are offered in the base.
Enrolment of first entrants takes place in January of each year, details of dates are intimated in local press, and also given to pupils presently attending the school. In Old Monkland primary we have a pre-entrant programme in place, which provides parents and pre-entrant children with opportunities to get to know the school and class teacher.
The school plays an important part in the community. It is our policy to foster in the pupils an interest and pride n the school and the community, which it serves. An awareness of the quality of life around them is encouraged. A link has been established with health visitors, the police, community involvement, community education and a Kirkwood Link-Up Group. The Kirkwood and Kirkshaws Area Liaison Committee has been established, which brings together officers of the council, elected members and representative of local organisations to look at needs, issues, and problems as they affect the community, with a view to working together to have some impact on the problems in the area.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Old Monkland primary normally transfer to Rosehall High school.
