Newmains primary is a non-denominational, co-educational primary school. We promote equal opportunities for all in our school. We seek to ensure that everyone associated with our school is treated with respect and fairness has a sense of belonging to our school community and feels welcome and safe in it. |
| Newmains primary school was built in 1908 and was used from then until 1970 as a combined primary and junior secondary school, with pupils travelling in from the surrounding villages. In August 1998 a nursery class was established in the school and we now welcome children from the age of three into our building. |
 |
In the centre of the main building we have a spacious hall which is used at present as an activity area. At one entrance to the main building a ramp has been built to allow easy access to disabled children who may have to use a wheelchair. There are 11 classrooms, a learning support area, a library, a music and TV room and a drama and parents room, which is shared with our home and school link worker.
We have 18 teaching staff, two classroom assistants, two special needs assistants, two clerical assistants and a selection of support staff.
There is a range of extra curricular activities that take place in the school. During the session children may be offered the opportunity to take part in cross-country running, swimming, competitions, quiz teams and sports days. Outings are arranged for children throughout the session and are usually linked to environmental studies. We are always looking for parents to help us on these outings. At Christmas time we usually also take the children out of school to a pantomime or the cinema, and from time to time we have visiting drama companies in to perform for us. The gym hall and dinning hall are the main facilities used for indoor activities and Victoria Park is occasionally used for outdoor events.
We hope that parents feel welcome in school and feel free to visit the school throughout the year. Parents are an important part of their child's education and we want parents to be involved in the school, know what is happening and feel part of it. Parents are invited to various events in school throughout the year eg coffee mornings, book fair, displays of work and class assemblies. We hope that they will be able to come along.
We are very fortunate to have a home school link worker working with us in school. She is principally involved with children and parents and children, organising the making and distribution of story sacks, organising a number of courses for parents and taken part in our primary one parent meetings.
Many of our parents become familiar with the school when their children begin nursery, either in our nursery class or the nursery centre, which is situated in the playground. Good positive links are established before the children start formal education and we value the contact with both parents and children that is developed in those early years. The children in the nursery class will, when appropriate, join in with whole school activities.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Newmains primary normally transfer to Clyde Valley High, Wishaw. A programme of activities and visits takes place throughout the children's primary seven year which include, a tour of the school, primary singing day, curricular days and competitions and quizzes. Subject specialist teachers and guidance staff from Clyde Valley high visit our school in the summer term to meet with the children and teachers.
