Newarthill Primary

Newarthill Primary school badge Newarthill primary is a non-denominational and co-educational school for children between the ages of five and 12 years. Newarthill primary is a lively, busy and generally happy school characterised by good relations between pupils and staff, both teaching and non-teaching. The present building, which was opened in August 1973, is of circular, semi-open plan design and offers accommodation for a wide range of educational and recreational activities.

Each of the school's seven classrooms has direct access to cloakrooms, toilets and playground areas. The school grounds, parts of which have been laid out and planted by parents, staff, children and help from the VAMW, provide pleasant surroundings for environmental studies, activities and outdoor games. In June 2002 our new Jubilee garden was opened by our local Councillor. Facilities within the school building include a central hall suitable for physical education, drama and music; a general purpose /dining area and kitchen; a medical and visiting suite.

There are many extra curricular activities offered to our pupils including handcrafts, football, art, keep fit, netball, school choir, athletics and mini netball.

The school staff place great importance on parents' support for, and interest in the work of the school. We are fortunate to have regular parental support and parent helpers for structured play and library duties. We are always looking for extra helpers.

Two appointments are offered each term during which parents are invited to visit classrooms and to see the school. On these occasions, parents are able to talk with the class teacher about their child's programme of work and to see the books and materials being used in the school. However, parents are encouraged to maintain regular contact with class teachers throughout the session. Arrangements are made for pre-school children and parents to visit the school during the summer term before admission at which time parents are able to seek further information.

The school welcomes opportunities for involvement with local community groups, church and youth organisations. Close links are maintained with the other two primary school's in the village, Keir Hardie Memorial primary school and St Teresa's primary school and, whenever possible, we join with them to support local activities. Valuable links have been established with Brannock high school.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Newarthill primary normally transfer to Brannock High School.
