Muir Street Primary

Muir Street Primary School Badge

Muir Street Primary is a non-denominational, multi culture school and caters for the needs of pupils from primary one to primary seven. The school has strong links with local nurseries and Braidhurst High ensuring smooth transition between nursery, primary and secondary. Our pupils  have visits from secondary staff and visit the high school for a variety of activities. We have a very positive partnership with parents and the wider community and work together to prepare our children for their role of responsible citizens in society.

The school dates from the 1920s and is a two storey building. There are ten working classrooms along with a library, early intervention base and structured play room. Our hall serves as an assembly hall, gymnasium and dining area, Lanarkshire Childcare Services have use of four rooms for  after school care and we have a Parent Support Worker within the building.

Many extra curricular activities are offered to pupils throughout the year including football, netball,  dance, art, basketball and tri golf. During the session primary seven children have the chance to spend a week at Kilbowie Residential Activity Centre. The opportunity to be away from home and living with fellow pupils helps children become more self aware and self disciplined. They also learn to be more tolerant of others and work cooperatively. Primary seven pupils attend a 10 week block of swimming lessons at Wishaw Sports Centre.

At Muir Street Primary we believe in partnership with parents and pupils. We welcome parental involvement and would find it very difficult to organise many activities without their assistance. A monthly newsletter is sent home to inform them of school life forthcoming events. Parents are given advanced notice of parents’ evenings, educational meetings and social events. Our Parent Support Worker  assists us by providing opportunities for parents and pupils to increase their role in school life.

We are a health promoting school and have achieved our Gold Award. In addition we have two ECO flags and are working towards towards permanent ECO status. We hold an annual ECO/Health day and pupils participate in a variety of activities along with parents and representatives form the wider community. We have a wonderful garden that is used to support a number of Environmental Studies topics.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Muir Street primary normally transfer to Braidhurst High School.
