Mossend primary teaches children of primary age in the stages of P1 to P7 and nursery class. We are a non-denominational, co-educational school. Mossend primary is a large stone building built sometime in the 1800's. The total capacity of the school is 365 pupils. |
| Although an old building, it has the feel of a younger model and is a very well resourced school with 15 classrooms, two of which are nursery classes, a library, well-used parents' room, a computer suite, a GP room and various resource rooms. |

There are many different extra curricular activities available in the school including good news club, guitar club, netball club, recorder group, chess club, cross country running, craft club, football club, dance class, garden club and drama club.
At Mossend primary it is very important to us to have strong links between home and school. An open afternoon is held usually around March or April. On this occasion, while the school routine continues as usual, parents and friends of the school are invited to come into school to see us "in action" on a normal day.
When a new approach or classroom resource is to be used parents may be invited as a group to visit the classroom teacher, deputy head or assistant head for an informal meeting. At this time the teacher will explain how a resource is used and what the expected result of using the material. Parents have found these visits useful as they give a "hands on" insight to classroom methods. If a new approach or resource is to be introduced throughout the school a meeting will be called by the head teacher to explain the new material.
Many parents and family members help in the school in a regular basis. Some help in the library, some do photo-copying, some help at a craft activity and help little fingers, some do whatever the class teacher with whom they have been linked wants them to do. Visitors, children and staff all benefit from this link with home.
In January children who will be five before 1 March of the following year should attend their local school to register for starting school in August. At the January registration parents are invited back to school, usually during the month of May, for a meeting with the deputy and assistant head. At this, P1 launch ways of preparing the children for school will be discussed. Parents will also meet the school nurse, members of the PTA and members of the school board. At this meeting the parents will be given dates when their children are invited to attend school and spend half a day in the reception class with the infant teacher.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Mossend primary normally transfer to Bellshill Academy.
