Kildrum Primary

Kildrum Primary school badge

Kildrum Primary is a non-denominational, co-educational primary school situated in the Kildrum area of Cumbernauld teaching pupils from primary one to seven. There are currently 15 class teachers and four promoted teaching staff in addition to classroom assistants, additional support needs assistants, clerical staff, janitorial, catering and cleaning staff.  Our building is formed over three levels, with 13 classrooms, a nurture room, tutorial room, library and maths/ICT room.  We have a gym hall and a main hall which doubles as a dining hall.

We enjoy good relationships with Kildrum Nursery Centre and other associated pre-five establishments in the Cumbernauld area. This ensures a smooth transfer from nursery to primary school.  We have a comprehensive transition programme with opportunities for nursery children to visit our school in small groups with other children from their nursery and in larger groups with their parents.  There is an information session held for new parents and nursery children are invited to our annual Summer Sing-along.  School staff visit the children in the familiar nursery setting and we operate a buddy scheme where P6 pupils visit and work with the children in nursery and then support them when they come to school in August. Similarly, we enjoy good relationships with Cumbernauld High School and work with staff and parents to ensure a smooth transfer from primary to secondary education.   As part of the transfer programme, our pupils take part in a range of activities in Primary 6 and Primary 7 organised by Cumbernauld High staff and parents and staff attend a range of meetings.

Our school actively promotes links with parents in a number of ways.  Parents are welcomed into the school to help class teachers and the children whenever possible.  A series of curricular workshops for parents are organised throughout the year.  Parents get the chance to meet with staff and look at pupils work at our informal open afternoon in September and to discuss pupil progress at parent's evenings held in November and March each year.  Written interim reports give parents information about their child's progress in November as does the written end of term report in June.  Parents are kept fully informed of school events and news via monthly newsletters and receive information about what their children are learning in school via curricular information leaflets.  Parents are invited to end of term assemblies, school shows and our annual Summer fun day as well as a number of 'enterprise events' organised by classes.  We have an active Parent Council who support and enhance the work of the school, while the sub-group Parents' Association work very hard to raise funds for school through a range of fun activities for children and parents.

The school has strong links with the local community.   Our school chaplain, from the Salvation Army in Kildrum, leads monthly assemblies in school and our pupils visit the Salvation Army, Kildrum Parish Church and Sacred Heart Church as part of their study of Christianity.  We have good links with our school nurse and the community police who support our pupils at annual events such as Health Week and also provide talks to pupils at assemblies or in class linked to topics such as "People Who Help Us".  We have built very good relations with Cumbernauld Allotments Society who have helped us establish our school vegetable garden and who regularly work with the pupils to maintain it.  We recently developed a Business Partnership with 'Lafarge Plasterboards' as part of our enterprise work. Our pupils have taken part in competitions organised by Lafarge and we look forward to working with them further, linked to enterprise and education for work.

Within the school there are many extra curricular activities for pupils. These include netball, cross-country running, skipping, cross-stitch embroidery, ICT, rugby, badminton, cheer-leading, card-making, choir, science and cooking.  Our school takes part in a range of local competitions, tournaments and events including carol singing at Christmas, the Rosebowl Netball Tournament, annual skipping and cross-country dance festivals at the Tryst Sports Centre, a schools athletics festival and cross-country running competitions.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Kildrum primary normally transfer to Cumbernauld High School.
