Keir Hardie is a non-denominational, co-educational primary school covering the stages of primary one to primary seven. Our catchment area covers the south of Newarthill, Carfin and Dalziel Park estate. The school was opened in 1956 and was named after James Keir Hardie who was a founder member of the labour party and was born in Newarthill. |
| The school was adapted to meet current needs in 1993 and now consists of eight classrooms. One room is used for time out and for auxiliary staff activities. There is also a small room which can be used for meetings, a television room, a central hall for PE, assemblies and games and a separate dining room which operates a cafeteria system. The dining room is used for drama and other activities out with lunchtime. The school also has a non fiction library based on the Dewey System. |

Pupil roll statistics from Scottish Executive Education Department census at 12 September 2005. Rolls are subject to change throughout the school session.
The school offers a variety of extra curricular activities. Pupils from primary four to primary seven have the opportunity to learn netball. Games are arranged with other local schools. Pupils from primary four have the opportunity to be part of the school football team and to take part in monthly festivals held at Dalziel Park by North Lanarkshire Council. Primary six and seven pupils participate in an annual competition for the Pollock Memorial Trophy during the summer term. We also have a school band and pupils who are interested can learn percussion and recorder. The band takes part in Carfin Parish Church services at Christmas and at Easter. They also play at school events. A Scripture union is held twice a week during the lunch break. We have a gardening club which meets after school March to October and is open to pupils from primary four to seven. The pupils are also given the opportunity to see theatre on a regular basis. These include ballet, pantomimes and plays.
Keir Hardie has an open door policy and works in partnership with parents. Parents are welcome at all times and by working in partnership we help raise the attainment of our pupils. Information to parents is normally by letters which are distributed to pupils in their classes. Pupils work is displayed in the corridor and can be viewed at any time. Incentive charts and photographs of events are also displayed. Most children appreciate parental interest in their achievements. A team of parents and ex parents help on a voluntary basis in the classrooms. Grans and Grandpas are also welcome.
Pupils are given every opportunity to become involved in the local community. They actively assist in improving the school environment. This is evident in the school garden which is cared for by the pupils of our Gardening club. Awards have been won for the efforts in the garden eg Queen's Anniversary Trust Award, Eye Bright competition and the annual PEALS competition. I strive to make our playground a better place for our pupils. By caring for these gardens the pupils develop a sense of ownership and worth for their surroundings. In June 1999 the school was given the highly prestigious ECO Award and in June 2001 a second award was gained, followed by a third in June 2003. We are the first school in Lanarkshire to be given this award three times. The school welcomes visits from the local police who discuss safety issues and health issues including Drugs Awareness. The school nurse and dentist also play a part by contributing to our topic work.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Keir Hardie Memorial primary normally transfer to Brannock High School.
