Glencairn Primary and Nursery

Glencairn Primary school badge We are situated in the centre of Motherwell with easy access to the M74 and M8. The school dates back to 1902 and is a two storey sandstone building with a ramp to allow access for wheelchair users. There is also a nursery, located in the building.

We are unique in that although it is a mainstream school serving an area in Motherwell, we also have a proportion of severe to profoundly hearing impaired pupils. The children, some of which from authorities outwith North Lanarkshire are fully integrated throughout the mainstream school following the full 5-14 curriculum. The school is staffed by 15 teaching staff. The assistant head teacher has responsibility for supporting hearing impaired pupils and senior teachers whose duties include support for whole school issues and in some cases will also include duties related to supporting the hearing impaired pupils. We also have two speech and language therapists and seven ancillary staff while the nursery is staffed by a nursery teacher and four nursery nurses.

Hearing impaired pupils at all stages in the school are integrated with mainstream pupils in small classes and taught by teachers of the deaf. In total there are 13 classes, eight with hearing impaired pupils integrated within mainstream.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 years so that they have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Glencairn primary normally transfer to Dalziel High, Motherwell.
