Gartsherrie is a non denominational, co-educational primary establishment covering stages primary one to primary seven. The school is a one storey building dating back to 1906 and was a key landmark in the days of Gartsherrie's iron and steel industry period. There is a central hall with the classrooms set around it. We have 11 teaching and 12 non teaching staff. |
| The school plays a full part in many aspects of community life. Pupils participate in the annual Monklands Festival and provide entertainment at our local senior citizens' residential home. We raise food gifts at Harvest time for our local senior citizens and have successfully taken part in a local appeal for Christmas gifts for children in Eastern Europe. We take part in North Lanarkshire's "Soccer Sevens Football Initiative" and hope to participate in further arts projects as they come on stream. |

At Gartsherrie we have very good home and school links. Every pupil is issued with a homework diary and a timetable so that parents are aware of the homework to be carried out and when gym kit etc is required during the week. We also encourage parents to use the diary as a means of communicating with the class teachers. We have regular newsletters which detail forth-coming events and keep parents informed of the school's successes and any important news about the building etc. parents are also invited to the carious class and school assemblies held throughout the year. We issue parental guides to the curriculum and organise open afternoons where parents can join their children in school and experience some of the activities which their children will undertake.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 years so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Gartsherrie normally transfer to Coatbridge High School.
