Dykehead primary is a non-denominational co-educational primary school for pupils aged four to twelve located in Shotts. The school opened on 21 October 1987 and is of open-plan design, built to accommodate 462 pupils. It has two wings representing infant department and senior school. |

Shotts is a former mining community with a population which has expanded to 14,500 people. The local town amenities include a leisure centre and pool, library, community centre, theatre and health centre, which are utilised by the school.
Throughout the year, we encourage many out-of-school activities. Classes studying the local environment will go on short walks accompanied by teachers. Improvements to the environment are discussed and when possible the school has taken pat in local tree planting programmes. Our classes may go further afield to study the seashore and places of historical interest. Dykehead takes part in general knowledge competition in the district run by the community police and district library, and also in a variety of sporting/environmental events.
Dykehead values its close links with parents. We have the active support from many of our parents. Some parents help to run events to raise funds for the school and they are always looking for additional help. Newsletters are regularly sent out informing parents when events are being held. Throughout the year parents are invited to the school on both formal and informal occasions. Information of these will also be included in our newsletters.
Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Dykehead primary normally transfer to Calderhead High school.
