Calder Primary and Nursery

Calder Primary school badge

Our school is a large sandstone building, which was built in 1907 to serve the Jerviston area of Motherwell. It is set amidst a tarmac playground area and at the back of the building there is an area where the former dining hall was situated which has now been developed into a school garden. The playground is decorated with games for the children.

There are 13 classrooms, nine of which house our primary classes and two of which presently serve as a nursery class. The other two classrooms are presently utilised as an infant playroom and an ICT base respectively. In addition we have a newly refurbished library and also a music room, plus two open plan areas, which are used to store resources.

Our aim is to help all of our pupils achieve their potential by offering a broad, balanced curriculum, which fosters positive attitudes and builds an appreciation of self worth and respect for individuals and property.

Citizenship is a very important aspect of the work of the school and we are very proud of gaining an Eco Flag Award for our work in promoting positive attitudes about our environment.

We are fortunate at Calder primary to be able to offer the children the opportunity to participate in a number of after school activities such as our football club, which is available for our primary six and seven pupils. The netball and cross country clubs are available for pupils in primaries five, six and seven. Our primary four and five pupils have the opportunity to take part in our recorder group. In addition the children in primary six and seven have the opportunity of going on a week's residential visit. Although this takes place during term time, it is of sound educational value and is highly recommended as a worthwhile experience.

Monthly newsletters will be issued to parents giving information on events within the school. Parents will be consulted on the development of new policies and also when the school is determining priorities for the development plan.

The school has an important role to play in the local community. We welcome involvement from any area of the community and have fostered especially strong links with the police department, social work and medical services. The school nurse is a regular visitor to the school and works with teaching staff to promote health education. Representatives from various council departments visit the school to give talks to the children on litter, home safety and road safety.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Calder primary normally transfer to Braidhurst High School.
