Alexandra primary is a Roman Catholic, co-educational primary school teaching children from primary one to primary seven. The current teaching staff complement comprises of head teacher, deputy head teacher, 14 full time teachers, part time teaching staff attend three days a week and four classroom assistants. |
| The school is situated in the centre of Airdrie, opposite the railway station with a catchment area extending from Coatdyke to Cairnhill. A number of pupils are in attendance by the way of a placing request and as a result, the majority of pupils require transport to school. |

Alexandra originally opened as Alexander's School in 1848, then at a later date became Airdrie Academy before being renamed as Alexandra. The school opened as a primary in August 1971 and was officially named in November 1971.
As the school and children are an integral part of the local community, children and teachers encouraged to develop relationships with various groups. Communications between churches and St Andrew's Hospice play an important role. Visits to the library and other local services are encouraged. Field trips are organised on a regular basis.
Pupils normally transfer from to primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5, so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils normally transfer from Alexandra to St Margaret's High, Airdrie.
