The School Run

The School Run is gradually becoming the School Crawl throughout North Lanarkshire. Most parents will tell you that it's the best way to get their children to and from school, but is it? Children are being deprived of time with their friends before school starts and learning the basics skills of road safety as a pedestrian on the road. This makes them more vulnerable when they are out on their own. North Lanarkshire Council suggests the following to avoid problems with the school run

• Avoid taking the car if you can.  Walking, cycling and public transport are all better options not only for the children themselves but also for the environment.
  
• If you have to drive, join the Council's car sharing scheme and share journeys with other parents, and take it in turns. Allow plenty of time for the journey.  Crashes cause delay, and are normally caused by drivers going too fast and driving too close to the car in front.
  
• Park considerately and safely.  Never double park, block driveways or simply rely on the footbrake to keep the vehicle still as children climb out of the car.  Never stop on the "zig zags", even briefly and let children get out on the near side of the car - not onto the road!
• Register your journey and check for other parents going to the same school at through North Lanarkshire's Car Sharing Scheme.
