North Lanarkshire Council has been involved in Safer Routes to School Projects since May 1996.

The main aims of a Safer Routes to School project are to:

  • Encourage more children to walk or cycle to school
  • Reduce the number of school journeys made by car
  • Make the roads safer for children walking and cycling to school

Other benefits from the projects are

  • Improved health from the additional exercise
  • less congestion on the roads near schools
  • Improved air quality

A SRTS working group was set up by the Council so that this matter could be taken forward.

The first step was to select 3 schools to pilot SRTS. The schools were selected on the basis of road accidents involving primary school children on journeys to and from school. A budget of £100,000 was allocated for SRTS projects.

The three schools chosen for Phase 1 were

  • Sacred Heart PS Bellshill
  • Eastfield PS Cumbernauld
  • St Bartholomew's Coatbridge

The Safer Routes to School project was implemented at Sacred Heart in 1999.

Eastfield followed during 2000-1 and St Bartholomew's will be implemented this year.

We are now about to start on phase 2

The schools selected for Phase 2 were:

  • Dykehead PS
  • St Timothy's PS Coatbridge
  • Thornlie PS Wishaw
