Parents are being encouraged to 'Park Smart' when dropping off or picking up their children from school.

The West of Scotland Road Safety Forum in conjunction with North Lanarkshire Council's Community Safety group have devised the Park Smart campaign to tackle drivers who stop on the road right outside schools, This campaign highlights the fact that to do this is selfish, irresponsible and dangerous for children.

The campaign also stresses the fact that road traffic congestion at the school's entrance could delay any ambulance, fire engines or even Police vehicles from attending an emergency.

It is hoped the campaign will raise awareness of the dangers and encourage drivers to be more considerate by parking in a safe place and walk with their children the remaining distance to the school gates.

The Council receives more complaints about the congestion at school gates than any other road safety issue and it is one that can easily be avoided. Many parents don't need to drive their children to school but if for some reason they find it necessary then it would be safer to park a short distance away from the school entrance.

Road safety experts are concerned those children who are driven to school regularly miss out on practical pedestrian awareness. Please use the "Contact us" box at the top right hand side of your screen if you have any questions. Alternatively, you can use our online Comments form.
