School Meals - General Information

Catering Services provide meals in all primary, secondary, special needs and nursery schools in North Lanarkshire.

Primary Schools - Did you know?

  • We are serving new well balanced school lunch menus, with larger portion of healthier items
  • Free Bread is available daily to all pupils
  • Free Fruit is provided for all Primary 1 and 2 pupils, three days per week
  • Free water is available daily to all pupils
  • A Leaflet is available on Healthy Packed Lunchbox - A Guide to Parents  to help make you packed lunches more exciting
  • Over 70 schools in North Lanarkshire offer a breakfast service.
  • In 2006/07 we provided approximately 2 million meals in Primary schools
  • The cost to run Catering Services within North Lanarkshire during 2006/07 was £17 million.
  • Copies of our performance and consultation reports are available form our Catering Headquarters on 0141 304 1954.  Information can be made available in different formats as required e.g. large print or other languages etc.

Secondary School - Did you know?

  • We provide new balanced school lunch menus, with larger portions of healthier items
  • Free bread is available daily to all pupils
  • We have and incentive scheme to reward those who choose healthier options within all Secondary schools.
  • We provide a breakfast service within all 25 Secondary schools
  • The sale of fruit, salad and pasta has increased from previous year
  • In 2006/07 we provided approximately 1.4 million meals in Secondary schools
  • National Entitlement cards will soon be replacing Young Scot Cards

Catering Services is committed to provided high standard of quality in the delivery of our service. To help us achieve this, a noticeboard is displayed in all primary and secondary schools in North Lanarkshire.  This noticeboard is an integral part of the communication process with staff, pupils and parents, enabling us to circulate information, promote the service and encourage feedback from customers and staff in each unit.

Digi-Dude

The primary schools have a cool character named 'Digi-Dude'. He is our healthy eating mascot and can be seen on menu boards displayed in primary school dining rooms. 
Free School Meals

Did you know?

750,059 primary and 295,764 secondary school pupils in North Lanarkshire qualfy for a free school meal.  Free school meals are available to children whose parents are in receipt of Income Support or income-based Job Seekers allowance.  The child must attend a North Lanarkshire Council managed school.

Application forms are available from schools, First Stop shops and Education Area Office.

Catering Services is committed to achieving high standards of quality in the delivery of its services and was awarded Chartermark status in 2004.  The only Education Catering Service in Scotland to attain this prestigious award. Catering Services have an ongoing commitment to Healthy Eating and you may find our Diet and Nutrition Policy of interest. Catering Services will not knowingly use food ingredients which have been genetically modified.
