National testing, education 5-14

Contents

Schools in North Lanarkshire are implementing the 5-14 Development Programme. Part of that programme aims to improve the ways in which teachers assess children's work. This leaflet explains how national testing will help teachers to assess how individual children are getting on at school.

The 5-14 programme is for children in Primary one-seven and in Secondary one-two.

It aims:

  • to give clear guidance on what children should be learning;
  • to improve assessment of children's progress;
  • to give parents better information about the curriculum, and about their children's performance.

Teachers have been advised on the various subjects of the curriculum and on the time to be spent on each. In each subject a system of "attainment targets" has been identified for the children to work through. These attainment targets are grouped in five levels, A to E. Some children will advance through them at a steady pace, others will need more time.

Teachers assess a child's work in a number of ways, including observation and discussion, specific tasks, school tests and national tests.

National tests in reading, writing and mathematics will help teachers in their assessment and in reporting to parents. This leaflet gives more specific information about the tests and how they will be administered. It also answers questions parents have been asking.
