Drug misuse

All agencies in contact with children and their families have a responsibility to act if they become worried about a child's welfare or a parent's ability to care for the child safely and adequately.

In line with Scottish Executive advice, every school in North Lanarkshire has in place a policy to deal with incidents relating to drugs and solvent misuse.

The policy ensures that :

  • drug education is provided for all pupils
  • procedures exist for dealing with drug related incidents
  • parents/carers are given information on drugs and drug misuse
  • parents/carers are informed about policy and procedures
  • staff are well informed about drugs, the policy and procedures
  • community police are involved in providing information and support other agencies are contacted as appropriate.

Definition:

Drugs: controlled substances such as amphetamine, heroin,cannabis; also misuse of solvents, medication plus tobacco and alcohol.

Warning signs

  • sudden mood swings
  • aggressive or irritable behaviour which is out of character
  • loss of interest in school, sport or other activities
  • a change of friends
  • unusual sleep patterns, sleeping more or having difficulty sleeping
  • unusually secretive behaviour or lying
  • money going missing from the house or belongings being sold
  • unusual objects found e.g. powders, tablets,capsules, scorched tin foil, empty plastic bags smelling of glue, repeatedly folded small pieces of paper, tobacco papers, syringes relating to drugs and solvent misuse.
