St. Bernadette's Primary
Perfect potters
One of the most popular Out of school learning programmes is pottery for Primary 7. We have been running this course of pottery for four years now and Primary 7 pupils look forward to this with great expectation and excitement.
Our sculptor is an ex-teacher, Mr J.Tinney. He supplies all the materials and selects the appropriate designs depending on the time of year, for example pre-Christmas, our programme would include snowmen, and in spring it may be models of hedgehogs. This gives our pupils the opportunity to work with an expert and to create a product of high standard. The opportunity to be introduced to a hobby for life is an exceptional one.
Over the years staff have ranged from teaching to non-teaching and have welcomed this as a staff development opportunity and enabled them to work alongside pupils in an informal climate. The pupils' delight with the progress of clay modelling and the final triumph of work being exhibited in school has proven to us time and time again the high value of this type of Out of school learning activity. The programme has also had a spinoff into daytime schooling as we have had pupils working on the potter's wheel for parents' open days.
Another boost to our pupils' confidence is having their work and models exhibited in the Education department at Kildonan Street. Visitors from the Aiming Higher Steering Group have visited the pupils in action with Mr. Tinney in their after school programme.
