Baird Memorial Primary
Badminton and art clubs
Latest out of school hours learning groups to be established this session at Baird Memorial Primary are badminton and the art club. P7 pupils received tuition on badminton from a local coach, Mr David Johnstone at the beginning of the session. They now receive weekly training from Mrs Colville and have had two competitive events with the Holy Cross team and Mrs Patoni. They also went along to the Bank of Scotland event at the Kelvin Hall in November with another session planned at the Tryst Sports Centre in April.
The art club is running at the moment for P3 and a lot of new, specialised resources have been ordered in for this group. The children are enjoying mask making, collage, marbling, ink pictures, beading and enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere of the after school club.
Other clubs continuing are football, netball, Macfit and handball.
Muir Street Primary
Reading and maths blaster group
Reading and maths blaster are fun, interactive computer games designed to motivate learning. Reading and maths blaster caters for the ages to six to eleven year olds.
The software aims to: -
-
Improve literacy and numeracy skills
-
Allow the child to gain confidence in his/her abilities
-
Better improve their I.T. skills
Muir Street Primary uses the software as an after school activity for both parent and child. It is delivered in a fun and non-threatening manner. The parent support worker and sessional literacy worker offer support to both parent and child so that they can both receive the benefits of this activity.
At the moment we are evaluating our pilot (which was aimed at Primary 4 children) however, we felt that both parent and child did not each session until they had completed their level. This is evidence enough of it being a success.
