The "Goals" project began in 2000 with the central aim of encouraging young people to go on to higher or further education when they leave school. Eleven local authority areas in Scotland take part in "Goals" and North Lanarkshire Council has played an active part in the promotion and development of the project since its inception. Six high schools are involved in the initiative: Coatbridge, Columba, Cumbernauld, St Margaret's, Braidhurst and Calderhead.
Their pupils from S1 to S6 participate in a lively annual programme of activities which includes campus visits to further and higher education institutions, a two week summer academy for S3 pupils at Strathclyde University, weekly meetings with a student mentor at S5 and S6, support with UCAS applications and course choice advice, and attendance at school options nights by university staff.
Alongside, a primary "Goals" programme is offered to the associated primaries of the six high schools with activities ranging from art and design projects with students from the Glasgow school of art, campus visits within a three week programme of working with university students, and drama workshops.
The programme is a highly successful and popular strategy which makes a worthwhile contribution to the Education Departments' "Raising achievement for all" strategy.
