Family support outreach project

The aim of this project is to deliver home based support to vulnerable families with very young children and to promote social inclusion through a positive start in young children's lives helping them make the most of subsequent opportunities.

The emphasis is on early intervention and preventive work with families in disadvantaged communities.  The programme is aimed at children from birth to 3 years and their carers including parents, grandparents and extended family members.

There are four broad objectives:-

  • To improve children's social and emotional development
  • To improve children's health
  • To improve children's ability to learn
  • To strengthen families and communities

The North Lanarkshire project team consists of six project workers (Social Work Assistants) who are based in one of the six Social Work department area teams and project manager who is located in the Children, Families and Justice Headquarters team.

The objectives are:

  • To support vulnerable families in raising their children in their own homes and communities
  • To intervene early and prevent the need for later statutory involvement
  • To enable parents and carers to better understand and address their own and their children's needs and to feel more confident and competent in their parenting
  • To support families in identifying appropriate resources and assisting them to take up opportunities in their own community
  • To develop working partnerships with relevant agencies and projects from education, health and the voluntary sector in order to identify the range of needs of very young children in North Lanarkshire and to promote a co-ordinated approach to addressing these.
