Travelling costs a lot of money, but by making a few simple transport changes you could save a lot of cash.

And there are a lot of very convincing reasons to cut down on car travel.

The Facts

  • It's estimated that by 2021 there will be around 27% more cars on the road than there were in 2001.
  • Road transport causes noise and vibration.
  • Road transport is one of the main causes of poor air quality.
  • Road transport gives off carbon dioxide which contributes to climate change.
  • Road transport gives off gases which can make soil and water acidic.
  • In Scotland over 20% of those in higher education drive to college every day.
  • In Scotland 16% of those aged 17-19 travel as a car driver every day, this figure swells to 41% in the 20-29 age group and then to 62% for those aged 30-39.

If we all made some fairly simple changes to our travel patterns we could make a big difference. Let's put that into real terms; cycle to work, take the bus into town and walk to the pub (if you are over 18!). It will help the environment, save you money and improve your health.

Just 30 minutes a day of brisk walking or cycling can reduce your risk of getting heart disease, diabetes, becoming overweight or having problems with high blood pressure.
