Built Heritage and Design

North Lanarkshire Council recognises the value of the built heritage and good quality design in terms of its contribution socially, economically and environmentally to the area. We seek to manage and enhance existing townscapes, historic buildings, parks, designed landscapes, ancient monuments and archaeology sites in accordance with best practice.

Securing good quality design, and conserving and regenerating North Lanarkshire's historic features, are both important to the area's progression and development and a commitment has been made by the Council to address the built heritage and focus on using it in a sustainable way.

Designing North Lanarkshire sets out the basis for promoting high quality design in line with emerging guidance from the Scottish Government – such as the "Designing Places" Policy Statement. The emerging Development Plan and Supplementary Guidance will seek to provide more detailed assistance.

The Built Heritage and Design Team is also responsible for the diverse built heritage – including a vast amount of industrial history, which has characterised the area's towns, villages and countryside. This includes Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings and Archaeological sites.

The Development Management process seeks to ensure that appropriate development is of good design quality and takes account of the local context – including the built heritage, conservation areas or listed buildings. Development briefs, design guidance and other tools can also be used where appropriate to manage new development.
